"Back to business as usual"? I certainly hope not. But that's the risk you take when you take a step in a particular direction. You can't always predict what the next one will be. Unfortunately at this point most people are not radical, as I thin...

Thanks Brian But just a pause and then back to business as usual? Gee when will we ever stop loving the masters and joining with the enemy? I suppose that this is a start until more of our people can finally break the chains. I know full well th...

I think this is a terrific idea, not so much becasue it'll put pressure on the Democrats but because it'll help put and end to the protection racket they run on us. They they make us an offer they think we can't refuse. "Give money and time or el...

Given how much support HRC has given to conservative dems I assume we'd have to stop giving them money as well by extension ;)

I think we should support this, and you should convince everyone you know to sign on. The Democrats are playing to the Right and sucking up to the insurance industry because they think they can get away with it and no one is standing up to them. I...

No, I mean from the lying, hypocritical Congress. Why are they issuing this hue and cry on "democracy" in Venezuela and ignoring the repression in Honduras?

All this bluster on Venezuela and you could hear crickets chirping when the coup in Honduras happened.

Who are you? (Creative answers encouraged!)
I graduated from Brown University in 2004 and received a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Harvard Divinity School in 2007 with a focus in Hebrew Bible and Political Theology. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Religious Studies at Brown University with a focus on the Bible and the Ancient West Asian world.

I have been involved in numerous political causes in the past eight years including the global justice movement, the anti-war movement and the LGBT civil rights movement. I am more of a classical Marxist and have a rocky relationship with the more new-fangled stuff like Foucault and Butler (certain authors get pissy when you lump them all together as "postmodernists").

I am also a Christian and amateur theologian, with interests in theologies of liberation (especially black and Latin American), biblical prophets, and hermeneutics. I have studied and continue to study several biblical and cognate languages including Hebrew, Greek, Akkadian, Ugaritic and Aramaic.

No More Money to Anti-Progressive Democrats

I think we should support this, and you should convince everyone you know to sign on. The Democrats are playing to the Right and sucking up to the insurance industry because they think they can get away with it and no one is standing up to them. I have always believed that we need to go even further, and, as I've said before, divest ALL funds from ALL Democratic candidates--even the progressive ones. But I understand I'll get a lot of pushback on that one. This is a good first step.… Continue

To Unleash Power: An Essay on the National Equality March

The National Equality March is like many marches and protests I have attended: energetic, angry, massive, and awe-inspiring. Over 200,000 people showed up to a hastily-planned, low-budget march without corporate sponsorship, glitzy advertisements, and the organizational power of the traditional lobbyist groups. I consider the march a success for many of the reasons that others said: it energized people, it gave the movement a sense of empowerment, it caused the media to take notice, it allowed u… Continue

E. Lynn Harris Dead at 54

The LGBT community has lost a major figure and icon with the sudden passing of E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling author whose novels included gay and bisexual themes geared for a black audience. This is something that is still sorely needed. He will be missed greatly.

Rod McCullom has more details and a semi-obituary.

Another View of "Wendy Ho"

Mark recently posted about an act by a character named "Wendy Ho" and argued that the show was racist. I did not see her performance, which apparently received both jeers and applause at a San Francisco nightclub, but from Mark's description it seems as though the crowd was divided about the nature of Ho's performance.

I can understand the division. I looked at Ho's website and my initial reaction was actually not indignation but confusion. I didn't know what to make of it. Was it a satire of w… Continue

A Soiled Brief

I will say this upfront: I supported Obama. I even supported Obama in the primaries and do not regret that decision one bit. I supported Obama because after eight years of Bush, the Left needed a "win" that would inspire them and show the that political climate in America had changed. It is the symbolic power of his presidency that was important to me--and we should never underestimate the power of symbols. I supported him precisely because he talked a good game, would raise people's expe… Continue

Aw, too bad we're not closer. Thanks for your thoughtful comments back. It would be cool to met up if we're ever in the same city. Drop a line if you're in San francisco and i'll do the same if I'm back east

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the clarification. Are you in the San Francisco Bay Area? I'd love to talk more.

Honestly I have to look up those pre stone wall references. I'm still not convinced about more moderate people starting movements though-- unless I'm not hearing exactly what you are trying to say. I think of butch-femme working class bar culture for example. Although it could be said to not be activist I also think it could be argued as a factor in starting queer movements. So I'd love to talk more.

I do think there are many interesting and often ignored issues in LGBT communities. I too am worried that many queers will stop organizing once SSM is achieved. I see the reproductive justice movement as a fearful indicator of what may come. My understanding of this movement is that once abortion rights were secured, other reproductive justice issues that pridominately affected women who were not white or middle-class (such as the right to be free from forced sterilization) were simply dropped. I worry that once SSM is achieved activism to address issues such as those on the Beyond Marriage platform will simply be dropped.

Fast forward to 2008 and the right to abortion does not seem as strong a victory now as it did in the past. I think queer activists have a chance to avoid this trajectory although I have no ideas of what might keep people mobilized after a SSM victory.

Cheers,

Kevin
