Chris, the Phelps-a-thon idea is brilliant! I'm going to try to raise awareness about this and DrivingEquality.com here and on my other social networks and voluntary endeavors.

Haha sometimes I wonder if these people actually realize they help our causes by being so ridiculous and bigoted.

I am a big fan of using anti-gay leaders to raise money for LGBT causes. I've used Fred Phelps and Rick Warren to raise money for LGBT equality in the past. The Phelps-A-Thon we had in Boston back in December was really popular and very successful...

Who are you? (Creative answers encouraged!)
My three siblings and I grew up in a small town in central Massachusetts. When I was 9 years old, I started an organization named S.C.A.R.F (Save Condemned Amazon Rainforests). I recruited members and together we canvassed door-to-door to raise money. With the money we raised we were able to buy and preserve an acre of land in the Amazon rainforest.

I came out when I was 14 to my parents, friends, family, and classmates. Since that time, I have been an advocate for social justice and equality.

At age 15, I started a campaign to expel military recruiters from my high school based on the district’s non-discrimination policy. That was when I first encountered anti-gay politics.

I worked hard in various ways to promote tolerance and acceptance in my high school. I was the president of the gay/straight alliance and worked hard to educate the student body and faculty on LGBT issues.

I have worked on campaigns for many candidates and incumbents in the Massachusetts State Legislature. I was the campaign manager for a pro-equality candidate running against a staunch opponent of LGBT rights. I have also worked inside the State House, serving as Executive Assistant to the first female Senate President of Massachusetts.

I was a field organizer for MassEquality, working to protect equal marriage rights in Massachusetts. In 2006 I founded TakeMassAction, an watchdog group dedicated to tracking the radical right in Massachusetts and alerting the queer community of upcoming events, rallies, protests, hearings and meetings involving LGBT issue.

I am currently a full-time student majoring in History and Government. In early 2008, I was elected to Ward 1 of the Cambridge Democratic City Committee, and appointed as a Commissioner to the City of Cambridge GLBT Commission. I am also honored to serve on the Friends of GLBT Youth Board of Directors. I have a fierce passion for politics and social justice. My core issues are preserving the environment, achieving universal healthcare, protecting civil liberties, reforming immigration, combating poverty, ending war, promoting peace, and securing LGBT rights.

Hate Mail

I am on a 100-day, 16,000 mile, 48-state trek through the United States to collect stories from queer communities in hopes of advancing LGBT equality. The project is called Driving Equality. (http://drivingequality.com)

Since this journey began, I have received a ton of email from supporters and well-wishers. But I have also received hate mail from folks who disagree with the idea of equal rights for LGBT people. It is always a shock to receive an message like the one below:

Using Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps to raise money for queer youth

I am a big fan of using anti-gay leaders to raise money for LGBT causes. I've used Fred Phelps and Rick Warren to raise money for LGBT equality in the past. The Phelps-A-Thon we had in Boston back in December was really popular and very successful. So when I heard that the Phelps clan was coming back to Massachusetts to picket the high school in my city of Cambridge, I decided it was time for another Phelps-A-Thon.

In looking at the Ph… Continue

LGBT Rights Protest

This Saturday, supporters of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people, will rally at Boston City Hall to call on President-Elect Obama and the new Congress support equal rights. The event is being organized by Join The Impact MA, the same group that organized the protest at Boston City Hall on November 15th which drew thousands of people as Boston saw the largest LGBT related protest in decades.
