MontCo referendum seen as guide to nixing transgender laws in U.S.

This is an interesting article in The Examiner about a campaign by hate groups to get rid of trans rights. The article suggests that other groups may try to use a similar referendum tactic to stop trans rights and to get rid of other LGBT rights, so it's certainly worth a read. The direct post is from

Brokeback Mountain to become an Opera!

Wow! Check it out:

http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b141769_brokeback_opera.html

Brokeback Mountain apparently ain't over until the fat lady sings.

The New York City Opera has commissioned an opera based on the 2005 Oscar-wrangling flick about closeted cowboys that starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger.

In a statement, the opera house says American composer Charles Wuorinen will take his cues from both the Ang Lee film and the original short story by Annie Proulx about the tragic,… Continue

APA GID Update

The Bay Area Reporter has picked up this story. Articles may be read at www.ebar.com. Some transpeople are upset at the BAR coverage because it portrays Zucker in a positive light.

Honestly I don't know enought about Zucker to say if he is into the whole ex-gay thing (apparently there's been an NPR show on Zucker and his ex-gay connections). But I am concerned that he believes his work with young people helps prevent a transsexual outcome in adulthood, and instead leads to a likely homosexual o… Continue

Proposition threatens rent control- many queers would be priced out

Proposition 98 is a California proposition. The affects of 98 would extend beyond California though. In a nutshell:

98 says it addresses immanent domain reform. In reality it does that and so much more. A big impact of 98 on queer communities is the repeal of rent control. In communities such as New York where rent control has ended queer communities have been affected and many queers have been priced out. This is important for people outside of California because similar tactics have been used… Continue

Hi Kevin:

Sadly, I am not in the Bay Area (I wish!). I live on the East Coast (Boston area). I do enjoy this conversation and wish we could talk in person about them.

I'd like to add that not all movements are started by "moderates" (which is a relative term). Some are, however, and that seems to be the case at this time. I was not trying to turn this into a hard and fast "law" of organizing, I just think we need to be aware of when it is happening. Your point is well taken, though. We need not assume all movements are formed this way.

Your comments have also prompted me to rethink the modern queer movement. Let's assume for a moment that the queer movement began in 1969. If the queer movement was radical in the beginning, it benefited from the overall cultural radicalization of the 1960s. The demands were formed in a social context of radicalism.

Today, in my view, radicals and the left are still disorganized and in retreat. It is an atmosphere of political conservatism and so the demands (and tactics) of the queer movement are also somewhat conservative.

Thank you for your challenging comments!
