Two men in southern Malawi held a traditional but symbolic engagement ceremony Saturday, reportedly the first of its kind in the southern African country where homosexuality is still illegal and carries a maximum sentence of 14 years. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza held the celebration at Mankhoma Lodge in Blantyre amidst hundreds of onlookers.

Lawmakers in Mexico City, the capital and most populous city of Mexico with nearly 9 million inhabitants, approved a gay rights bill Monday that will change the definition of marriage to a "
free union between two people" instead of the current version, which specifies a union between a man and a woman. The revision was approved by a vote of 39 to 20, with five abstentions. Same-sex civil union…

Although same-sex marriages have been legal in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island
since 2005, several related laws had still referred to married couples as "man and woman," "wife and husband," or "bride and groom." Over the weekend, however, the
Domestic Relations Act, which altered 29 pieces…

Americans headed to the polls in droves yesterday to weigh in on a myriad of issues and candidates, including many dealing with the LGBT community.
The good news: In Kalamazoo, MI, 65 percent of voters supported an LGBT non-discrimination ordinance; currently, domestic partner benefits are leading in Washington with 51 percent of the vote, but only 50 percent of precincts have reported; Akron, Ohio, elected it's first openly lesbian candidate, Sandra Kurt, to city council.
The bad news: No on…

It has been devastating to watch thousands upon thousands of people vote against the rights of LGBTQ people over the past ten years. And it's been tragic to watch our community spend millions upon millions of dollars on losing ballot initiatives for marriage - defensive campaigns that…

Philip Spooner is a lifetime Republican, World War II veteran and, to everyone's surprise, a gay marriage supporter. The 86-year-old gave a heartfelt speech in support of gay marriage to Maine's Judiciary Committee back in April, and the video has just now become an internet hit.
Spooner's voice wavers often as he weaves his own life story into the speech, using his experience as a soldier as his m…

It’s hard for us to believe what we’re hearing these days. Thousands are losing their homes, and gays want a day named after Harvey Milk. The U.S. military is continuing its path of destruction, and gays want to be allowed to fight. Cops are still killing unarmed black men and bashing queers, and gays want more policing. More and more Americans are suffering and dying because they can’t get decent health care, and gays want weddings. What happened to us? Where have our communities gone? Did gays…

"I'm goin' coconuts but least I'm goin' my way.
I'll probably be here when that sun goes down.
Goin' crazy, ooh, from the heat!" — Goin' Crazy, David Lee Roth
Maybe it's just the unending heatwave in Texas, where any day below triple digits actually feels slightly chilly, but it seems to my overcooked brain that both sides on this same-sex marriage tug-of-war are coming down with a chronic case of the wackies. Or maybe it's just a sizzling hot summer everywhere and it'…

"I look at you and see the passion eyes of May.
Oh, but am I ever gonna see my wedding day?" — Wedding Bell Blues, Fifth Dimension
It became official yesterday afternoon when New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed a bill into law, making New Hampshire the sixth state to allow same-sex marriage. Lynch, a Democrat, personally opposed gay marriage but earlier said he would view the issue "through a broader lens." Virtually all of New England now allows same-sex marriage, wi…

I'll be frank... New Hampshire's fight for marriage equality has been confusing. Here's the short of where things are now. A marriage bill passed in the house and senate and went to Governor Lynch. Governor Lynch then asked for some additional amendments - language that reinforced things that were already in the bill around religious freedom - once again saying that religious groups would not have to perform marriages they didn't want to. Those amendments passed in the Senate but failed in the H…

I saw a gay couple on the news tonight say they wanted to leave the country because their rights were taken away. I fear that our leading LGBT organizations are using language that confuses our community into thinking all of our rights have been lost. We need to be sure all of us are empowered enough to know that in California gay couples are afforded all of the state rights of marriage,
and some of the best family/adoption laws in the country for LGBT/diverse headed family structures. To…

On Tuesday 5/26, the California Supreme Court will rule on Proposition
8. Regardless of the verdict, we need to take a stand.
Join us, 7pm at Copley Square on the night of the Supreme Court ruling for a
rally to celebrate the overturning of this hateful anti-gay law or to protest
this blatant denial of civil rights.
If the verdict is against marriage equality - we will be holding a New Orleans style funeral procession to display that the courts have killed marriage equality but celebrate our c…
