Tradition Does Not Equal Justice

tradition definition Tradition. The word just seems to jump out from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals decision (Nos. 14-1341/ 3057/ 3464/ 5291/ 5297/ 5818) against marriage equality.

Again and again, Judge Jeffrey Sutton ignores the clear words of the 14th Amendment and invokes tradition to…

Equal Love

by Mary Griggs

Despite Randy Thompson’s recent declaration that “Valentine’s Day is only for one man and one woman,” the LGBTQ community should not feel excluded from this day.

According to one legend, in 269, the Roman Emperor Claudius II prohibited marriage for young men, declaring that bachelors made better soldiers. Ignoring the ruling, Valentine secretly…

ENDA and Lifestyle Based Conduct

glaad enda

I was interviewed on Monday in regards to the historic vote in the Senate on an inclusive ENDA bill which moved forward with strong bi-partisan support (although every single vote against it was Republican).

The resulting article has just a single phrase from my discussion with the reporter from the Times-Picayune (read it here: …

Enders Game and Pride

orson scott card I read Enders Game when it came out during high school and really enjoyed it. I mean, what young person wouldn’t – it is the story of a kid, selected from everyone else for specialized training because he was smart, who survives school bullying and goes on to save the planet! All the special little snowflakes who didn’t really fit in at school, found a bit of wish fulfillment in those pages that we,…

Equality Wins!

What a great day at the Supreme Court!

DOMA declared unconstitutional!

In plain English, the federal Defense of Marriage Act defines “marriage,” for purposes of over a thousand federal laws and programs, as a union between a man and a woman only. Today the Court ruled, by a…

This Fight is About More Than Marriage!

We are fighting for more than marriage. We are fighting for our right to love.

Marriage equality opponents would condemn us to live without it. Denying us marriage is just the latest sortie from people who want to forbid people of the same sex the most fundamental of human…

Blog Against Homophobia and Transphobia

(c) by Mary Griggs

I want to blog about privilege today. By that I mean the unearned advantage, power or entitlement conferred by membership in the dominant group. For example, some of us receive age advantages, ethnic advantages, physical ability advantages, as well as advantages related to nationality and religion.

These benefits are often times invisible to us. From my own…

Sitting Through The Lies

(c) by Mary Griggs

homophoes change lightbulb

Most of us, even masochists, surround ourselves with people who respect us and support us. Not all of them will be like-minded but they will, generally, not denigrate us to our faces.

That’s why it can be such a shock to hear the voices of our enemies, as they spout lies in their testimony against laws that would protect lesbian, gay, bisexual,…

Reframing Religious Liberty

(c) by Mary Griggs

We have seen in the debates about the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act to the fights for marriage equality a reframing of the term ‘religious liberty.’

Religious liberty is an idea essential to America. It even predates the foundation of our Republic as religious persecution was the reason so many of our forbearers left the Old…

Live and Let Live? If Only!

(c) by Mary Griggs

Richard Land, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, is getting quite a reputation for his racially charged statements. Not to be satisfied with offending only one group, he  went on the…

Sticks, Stones, Words

by Mary Griggs

I recently witnessed a respected member of the LGBTQ community hectoring a respected member of the trans community on a Facebook forum.

She had posted a link about finding a t-shirt company that markets with the slogan of “tranny grannies” to be offensive. His response was that words have no power, that only actions hurt. He demanded that she…

Separate Is Not Equal

by Mary Griggs

gay lesbian dogtags

I'm an Army brat and I well know the myriad of benefits that came with being a dependent. There was  housing on post that really helped when living in places with high real estate prices or in foreign lands, a travel allowance that included all our stuff when traveling to and from duty stations, medical care for my numerous soccer injuries and runny noses, the…

Justice Delayed, No Longer Denied

lgbt camo

One little known aspect of the policy against “homosexuality” for the US military was that service members who were discharged for being gay or lesbian, had their separation pay cut in half. The policy, which was not part of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” statute was, therefore, not changed with the law was repealed.

Laura Schauer Ives, managing attorney for the ACLU of New Mexico,…

Enough

Twenty seven dead in a elementary school in Connecticut with twenty-two of them children between the ages of five and ten sure puts your day in perspective, doesn't it?

That 18-wheeler going below the speed limit in the passing lane on Highway 90 at 6 o'clock this morning? Those crowds I had to battle at three different malls? That unopened 2L bottle of vodka I…

‎"America's choosing day."

ELECTION DAY, NOVEMBER 1884

Walt Whitman (from Leaves of Grass, first published in 1891-92 edition)

If I should need to name, O Western World, your powerfulest scene and show,

’Twould not be you, Niagara—nor you, ye limitless prairies—nor your huge rifts of canyons, Colorado,

Nor you, Yosemite—nor Yellowstone, with all its spasmic geyserloops ascending to the skies, appearing and disappearing,

Nor Oregon’s white cones—nor Huron’s belt of mighty lakes—nor… Continue

Gayz and Storms

Frankenstorm Sandy had not even made it onto shore before Pastor John McTernan was declaringit God’s judgment for the “homosexual agenda.” This is the same guy who had made similar claims about Hurricanes Katrina (2005) and Isaac (2012).

The Phelps family of Westboro…

Go Purple on October 19 for #SpiritDay

What is Spirit Day?

An annual day in October when millions of Americans wear purple to speak out against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.

How do I get involved?

It’s easy! Simply take the pledge to "go purple" on October 19th as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and…

The Olympic Rainbow Rings and a Raspberry

Like people all over the globe, I've been watching many, many hours of Olympic coverage on my television and computer (stupid NBC Olympics app is not compatible with my phone!). I've watched in awe the pageantry from London and have gotten teary eyed at the pure joy in the faces of the medal…

Chick-filet-a-gay

Every single person who deliberately ate at Chick-fil-a on Wednesday and claimed they did so to protect Freedom of Speech or Freedom of Religion is operating under a misconception.

Mr. Cathy and the entire Chick-fil-a family is allowed, under the US Constitution, to have beliefs which differ from mine and I will defend their right to express them and I will fight any attempt to silence them.

But this isn’t about Christianity, the 1stAmendment or two…
