Groundbreaking Symposium to Provide Resources for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Families
Conference serves as a resource for diverse families and the health professionals serving them
What: QUEER FAMILIES = HEALTHY FAMILIES, is the first family symposium of its kind, bringing together top experts in the field of LGBT parenting along with same-sex parents and their children.
When: Sat., October 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: LGBT Community Center, 1800 Market Street, San Francisco
Who: Keynote speakers, include Dr. Charlotte Patterson, the nation’s most influential LGBT family researcher and Shannon Minter, Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights and lead attorney for state Supreme Court case that won the right to marry for same-sex couples. Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-SF) will open the conference.
Why: The conference takes place on National Coming Out Day and at a crucial time to offer support and resources for families. The event will offer 12 workshops covering a variety of legal, social, medical and psychological issues. Topics range from forming a family with children to approaches and challenges in parenting to the maintenance of the family over the long term.
The afternoon will close with a presentation by COLAGE and a screening of “It’s STILL Elementary,” a documentary by GroundSpark and Debra Chasnoff, Academy Award winner and producer of “It’s Elementary.”
The Conference is spearheaded by Gaylesta, The, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Psychotherapists Associatio;, the San Francisco LGBT Community Center and Our Family Coalition, Co-Sponsors include: COLAGE, the National Center for Lesbian Right and, New Leaf Service for Our Community.
